Product Information

1868 Shield Nickel reverse of 67. NGC AU Details (Reverse Wheel Mark). The Shield Nickel was a five-cent coin produced by the United States Mint from 1866 to 1883. It was the first five-cent coin to be made of a copper-nickel alloy. The coin is called the "Shield Nickel" because it features a design of a shield on the obverse, which is often referred to as the "Union Shield." The reverse depicts a large "5" for five cents, surrounded by 13 stars.

The Shield Nickel replaced the earlier Half Dime, which was made of silver. It was introduced to help alleviate the shortage of small denomination coins during and after the Civil War. The Shield Nickel went through some minor design changes during its production years.
