Product Information

1989 Jefferson Nickel minted in San Francisco. NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo. The Jefferson Nickel is a five-cent coin that has been in production by the United States Mint since 1938. It features a portrait of President Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and Monticello, his historic home, on the reverse.

The Jefferson Nickel was introduced to replace the earlier Buffalo Nickel and was part of a design competition won by Felix Schlag. The coin has undergone a few minor design changes over the years, but the basic composition and denomination remained the same. It's a widely circulated coin and is still used in daily commerce.

One notable variety of the Jefferson Nickel is the wartime silver alloy issues from 1942 to 1945, which contained 35% silver due to the metal's scarcity during World War II. These "war nickels" can be identified by a large mint mark over the dome of Monticello on the reverse.
