The 1964 Proof Kennedy half dollar is a significant coin for collectors due to its historical context, striking design, and the fact that it represents the first year of issue for the Kennedy half dollar series in proof quality.The Kennedy half dollar was authorized by Congress just 35 days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. The decision to honor the beloved president with a circulating coin was a swift and emotional response.
