Product Information

The Colombian half dollar, more formally known as the "Columbian Exposition half dollar," was issued by the United States Mint to commemorate the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. This coin features significant historical imagery, primarily celebrating Christopher Columbus and marking the 400th anniversary of his landing in the New World.

The obverse side of the coin showcases a profile of Christopher Columbus, while the reverse features a depiction of the Santa Maria, Columbus's flagship. The design was the work of Charles E. Barber, who served as the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint at that time. Each coin contains 90% silver and weighs approximately 12.5 grams, which was standard for silver coins during that era.

The Columbian half dollar was the first commemorative coin to be issued by the U.S. Mint. It is also notable due to its role in encouraging the tradition of commemorative coins in the United States. The issuance of these coins not only allowed the U.S. to celebrate significant historical events but also served to raise funds for various private and public causes.
