Product Information

Struck for the 1878 Gold Pattern's 140th anniversary, the limited-edition Smithsonian 1878 Morgan's Gold Eagle Ultra High Relief Reverse Proofs present Morgan's design as never before: struck as a dual-sided Ultra High Relief Piedfort in one ounce of 99.9% pure gold and two ounces of 99.9% fine silver. The minor changes made to Morgan's design include dual dates of "1878-2020" on the obverse, the word "Eagle" on the verse where the original's legal-tender value is displayed. The reverse also features the Smithsonian sun logo.

As double-thick Piedforts, these commemoratives were able to be struck in Reverse Proof condition, with mirrored designs struck high over frosted fields. This release represents the first ever commemorative medal approved by the Smithsonian to be offered with such dramatic relief on both sides.
