**Seated Liberty Half**

A United States silver half dollar coin first minted in 1839 and produced until 1891. It features a depiction of Liberty seated on a rock holding a staff with a liberty cap and on the reverse a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and shields representing the Union. Designed by Thomas Sully and Robert Scot, the Seated Liberty Half was introduced to replace the Capped Bust Half Dollar. It was a popular coin throughout its production run, serving as legal tender for everyday transactions.
